Introduction

But what this hobby has seen in recent years is a complete change in variety and designs of helicopter available; electric power has become the norm and multi-function helicopters that need no assembly whatsoever and can pretty much be flown straight out the box are being sold in hobby and toy shops alongside model cars and boats – this was an unthinkable idea not that long ago.

And even more recently, as the ongoing electronic revolution continues, we now have easy access to micro-size helicopters that sit comfortably in the palm of your hand and can be flown in a completely controlled manner around your living room…

Intro to RC Helicopters
RC Heli transmitters

Transmitters

This is the heart of the radio control system, the box that you hold and use to operate your helicopter from.

The word ‘transmitter’ is often abbreviated to just ‘TX’ both in writing and in speech (for example, an RC pilot might say “this is my new TX…” as opposed to “this is my new transmitter ”).

By the way, here’s a big one of those trans-Atlantic language issues; a transmitter is often just called a ‘radio’ in North America and perhaps other parts of the world too, but for this e-book it stays as a transmitter!

RC transmitters vary in complexity but the majority share the same common features; only the cheapest ones sold with toy helicopters will be very basic with no additional features or functions other than the sticks with which to control the helicopter.

Yaw Control

Yaw is the term given to the rotation of the helicopter about its vertical axis, in other words which way the nose is pointing, or the helicopter’s orientation.

With an airplane the yaw is controlled by the rudder but on a conventional single rotor helicopter the yaw is controlled by the tail rotor. On a coaxial heli it’s controlled by changing the main rotor speeds in relation to each other, but we’ll touch on that later.

A helicopter’s tail rotor is essentially a sideways mounted airplane propeller and generates thrust in exactly the same way; the difference is that thrust from a tail rotor is generated at ninety degrees to the fuselage, as opposed to an airplane’s thrust which runs parallel to the fuselage…

Yaw Control
Buying an RC Heli

Buying your RC helicopter

This chapter will guide you through the selection and buying process, a process that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

It could be that you only want to dabble your toes and play around with a toy heli, or maybe go a step further with a hobby grade coaxial, but if you’re serious about flying a more complex (and expensive) single rotor helicopter, especially an advanced CP model, then you do need to spend some time researching and reviewing your options and be completely happy with your final decision, before you hand over the money.

There are a few fundamental factors that are going to influence your decision on which heli to buy; the type of flying that you want to do, where you will be flying, and how much you can afford/are willing to spend.

Your first flight…

When you’re ready (take a few deep breaths and relax!) increase power/collective pitch until the heli begins to lift and the training gear parts company with the ground.

Don’t overdo it though, you don’t want to be flying high just yet; a few inches off the ground is all we’re looking for at the moment, so adjust the power/collective as you need to to prevent the heli climbing too much.

Remember that if you’re learning to fly on a small fixed pitch electric helicopter then the amount of lift is only controlled by main rotor speed, so your throttle stick movements are going to directly effect how fast the heli climbs and descends, and you’ll find that the helicopter will probably be up and down like a yo-yo until you get used it.

First RC Heli Flight

As the samples above briefly show, each page takes you step-by-step all the way. Every little detail is included and explained in a way that is easy to follow for everyone.

So why should I buy it…?

Quite simply, because it’s a damn good book – even if I say so myself.

I’ve been helping people get in to radio control flying via this website for over twenty years now. I’m passionate about it, and I love it. The e-book is a natural extension of my website, and over 2000 copies have been sold to date – and I’ve had just one single person say that it didn’t help them. I can live with that. Here’s just some of what you will learn:

  • Learn how to choose a sensible first helicopter instead of a future bin bag
  • Learn how RC radios, controls and power systems actually work
  • Learn how to assemble, check and prepare your plane for safe flying
  • Find out the exact steps for take-off, flying, trimming and landing
  • Understand how to deal with a crash and learn from it (instead of quitting the hobby)

And if after all that, you still don’t like it – we will give you your money back. No questions.

Don’t just take it from us, listen to our readers…

Whether you’re a believer in testimonials or not, here are some nice words that readers have actually sent me after reading the e-book:

“I’d like to add my personal testimony about Pete’s & John’s work; It’s simply phenomenal!

His way of explaining things are extremely easy to understand and I can truly say that his helicopter flying lessons gave the confidence I needed to fly the way I do it today.”

Carlos, Brazil

“Well I just purchased your eBook The Beginners Guide to R/C Helicopters and for the price you ask I didn’t expect all that much but bl**dy hell – I didn’t expect THAT! 140 pages, well written and illustrated AND I can understand every word! Very well done – even an old fart like me should get his vintage nitro heli into the air!!”

Mick, Australia

“Hi Pete….I can’t say enough about what a great ebook your guide to RC helicopters is. It is written such that even someone with absolutely no previous knowledge of helicopters can understand what is going on. Thank you so much!”

Buck, United States

“I just had to write to let you know I have just finished reading the Beginner’s Guide e-book I bought from you recently and the hardest thing was putting it down unfinished! Fantastic – easy to follow for a newbie into heli’s and so well laid out to get new pilots off the ground safely. Well done to you both!”

Eddie, United Kingdom

“From a Very Newbie-newbie. Thank you, thank you, thank you! WOW! finally someone that put all this heli-hell information into a comprehensive format.

… BRAVO. I’m so happy/excited to learn proper habits / terminologies. Thumbs on the sticks with knowledge. Best regards from Vancouver B.C.”

Marie-Louise, Canada

“Thanks for the Beginners Guide To Flying RC Helicopters ebook. I can’t think of a better written resource for people who are getting into this hobby/addiction. You guys nailed every important topic and cut to the chase in an easy readable format. I guess what I liked best about it is it’s current! It seems most other RC helicopter books I have come across are somewhat outdated due to the fast paced changes this hobby is experiencing. Not the case with your ebook and I suspect because it is an ebook, it will be pretty easy to keep it up to date. Well done both!”

Glenn, United States

“Pete, you and John have done a really great job with this book. I wish it had been published before I took up RC helis. I would have saved a lot of money and disappointment. Even after 5 months of flying I have learned much from it. Well written and well presented in layman’s terms, this has to be the essential reading for anyone considering buying their first heli before they go out and buy it.”

Mark, United Kingdom

“I wanted to let you know how much I’m enjoying your Beginners Guide to Helicopters that I purchased a few days ago. You’ve cleared so much up for me in an understandable way. I purchased another RC Heli hard copy book at a hobby shop a couple weeks ago that was suppose to be for beginners, but it was focused on nitro power and didn’t touch on electric power at all. I really want to get my first decent RC helicopter for Christmas and this guide is perfect for me.”
